Tigers rally in eighth for 10-6 win over Lions

Hays, Kan. -- Kelton Rule hit a grand-slam to cap a seven-run eighth inning and lift the Fort Hays State Tigers to a come-from-behind 10-6 victory over the Missouri Southern Lions Friday evening (Apr. 23) in Hays, Kan.

The Lions held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth when the Tigers staged a huge two-out rally.

Starter Garrett Groom retired two of the first three hitters when Jordan Payne singled home Brennan Peterson for the Tigers' first run of the eighth.

Kyle Stacken followed that with a two-run blast that tied the score.  After a double by Sloan Soulia and a single by Nash Smith ended the night for Groom, Tyler Jinks came on in relief.

Jinks didn't fare much better as he walked Chris Santoscoy to load the bases that set up Rule's game-winning grand slam.

Fernando Lugo walked to lead off the ninth for the Lions, but relieve Mat Atkinson struck out the side to close out the victory for the Tigers.

The Lions (19-23, 14-17) jumped out on top in the first inning 3-0 on an RBI double by Jacob Taylor and a pair of unearned runs.

The Tigers (26-17, 18-15 MIAA) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second but the Lions answered in the third with two of their own on a two-run homer by Joe Lincoln.

Southern led 5-3 in the sixth when Skyler Rawlins led off the inning with a double and crossed the plate on an error.

Rawlins went a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate for the Lions and scored three times.

Lincoln was 3-of-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Rule went 2-of-4 and drove in five runs to lead the Tigers' offensive attack.

The Lions and Tigers will continue the four-game set with a doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 24) starting at 2 p.m.
