Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team picked up a double-header sweep of Sioux Falls today behind two masterful pitching performances, winning game one 9-0 and game two 7-0.
Southern (5-0) got a win in game one from Cody Griebling as the senior went the distance, allowing just one hit and striking out seven to earn his second win of the year.
The Lions scored one run in the third, but scored three in the fourth and five in the fifth to put the game away. Michael McCoy went 4-4 in the game with three RBIs and a run scored. Luke Acosta was 1-3 with four RBIs and a run, while Harrison Gerber and Thomas Wilson scored two runs each.
In game two, Ryan Wheat followed Griebling's performance with another gem of his own as the senior went the distance, allowing just two hits in the complete-game shutout. He struck out seven and walked just one in the game.
The Lions broke the game out in the third with five runs and added another run in the fourth and sixth. Acosta was 2-4 with a pair of RBIs in the game, while Wilson went 2-3 with two runs scored. Jim Gilkerson went 1-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two driven in.
The Lions will finish up the four-game set with Sioux Falls tomorrow with a pair of games beginning at 1 pm at Joe Becker Stadium.
