Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team swept a double-header with Pittsburg State today, picking up a pair of Sonic Trophy Game wins, 2-1 and 15-10.
The Lions (19-7, 12-6 MIAA) won game one on a walk-off double from Dane Kolkmeyer, scoring Sam Ryan. Cody Griebling went the distance for Southern, striking out five and allowing just one unearned run in a battle of aces.
PSU (10-11, 8-6 MIAA) starter Matt Stalcup went six and two thirds of an inning, striking out two, walking two and allowing two earned runs.
The Lions scored in the top of the first of game one when Tee Helsel doubled to the right field wall, scoring Michael McCoy. After Pitt tied the game in the third, neither team scored for the next three innings. With an out in the seventh, Ryan walked. After another out, Dane Kolkmeyer doubled to left center and a bad hop allowed Ryan to score the winning run.
In game two, the Lions scored in every inning, but one en route to the win. Jesse Kinzey started and went four and two thirds of an inning, but Grant Conrad picked up the win, throwing three and a third innings of relief.
Luke Acosta went 5-5 in the game with four runs scored, tying an MSSU school record for hits in a game. McCoy went 3-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Kolkmeyer and Will Wagner both drove in three runs and scored a run each. Wagner picked up his first home run of the season, while Acosta, Ryan, Helsel and Kolkmeyer had a double each and McCoy picked up a triple.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend at No. 10 Central Missouri. Southern comes into the weekend tied with Emporia State for second in the MIAA and look to pass Central for tops in the league.
