2012- Enters his senior season with the potential to go down as one of the top receivers in MSSU history. Already second all-time in receptions with 172, Zerkel needs just 78 more to tie Colin Bado for No.1 all-time. His 2,433 yards rank him third all time in school history and he needs just 357 more to move into second place and 690 to pass Rod Smith for tops in that category. His 17 receiving touchdowns rank fourth all-time and he sits just one from tying for third and four from tying for second all-time.
2011- A first-team All-MIAA, All-Region and All-American selection, Zerkel put together one of the top individual seasons by a Lion receiver in school hisory totaling 77 catches for 1047 yards and six scores. He was the MIAA leader in receptions per game as well as receiving yards per game at 104.7, marks good enough for fourth and six nationally, respectivally. His receptions as well as receiving yards rank him third all-time in a single season. Had a season-high 193 yards on 8 catches in a win over Lincoln where he had a season-long reception of 92 yards and 3 touchdowns.
2010 - In his second year as a starter, Zerkel dazzled Lions’ fans with his spectacular display of leaping grabs and athletic plays. Zerkel was quarterback Collin Howard’s favorite target before a late injury derailed his season. The Webb City product still managed to have a solid year statistically with 52 catches for 759 yards (both second on the team) and a team-leading five touchdown grabs.
2009 – Was the Lions’ top receiver starting in all ten games … caught a team-high 44 passes for 641 yards at 14.6 yards per catch … averaged 64.1 yards a game and had six scores on the season … had his best game with 135 yards on six catches for two touchdowns, including a season long 40 yard grab.
In 2008: Sat out the season as a redshirt.
In high school: Zerkel was part of a state championship team at Webb City High School with current Lion Collin Howard … played for coach John Roderique at Webb … A first team All-Conference, All-Area, All-District, All-Region and All-State selection this past year at wide receiver for the Cardinals … The Joplin Globe Offensive Player of the Year, Zerkel finished with 40 receptions for 766 yards and 10 touchdowns … Zerkel was also a standout basketball player and was a first-team All-Conference and All-Area selection last year as a junior, while being named conference MVP … Zerkel is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the honor roll at Webb City.
