Southern football signs 30 as part of its 2014 Signing Class

Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern football coach Daryl Daye has announced the addition of 30 newcomers as part of his 2014 recruiting class. Ten are already on campus and the other 20 will enroll this fall. 

Below are short bios of the players that Daye has added for 2014. 

JUCO Transfers - Already on Campus

Martice Buckley – CB – 5-9 – 180 – Charleston, Miss. – Northeast (MS) CC  (Lake Cormorant HS)

Buckley comes to Southern after starting two seasons at Northeast Mississippi CC for coach Ricky Smithers … At Northeast, Buckley finished his career with 90 tackles and two interceptions for the Tigers … Prior to Northeast, Buckley prepped at Lake Cormorant High School in Charleston, Miss. .. A three-year starter for the Gators and coach Nick Nester, Buckley was a two-time All-District selection on both sides of the ball … he finished his career with over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns, as well as a school record eight interceptions … He was the district Defensive MVP … Buckley is the son of Linda and Timothy Buckley and is undecided on his major at Southern.

Marquez Cohen – CB – 5-10 – 193 – Columbus, Ga. – Fort Scott CC (Jordan Vocational HS)

Cohen redshirted at Fort Scott and will come to Southern as a freshman with four years of eligibility … He prepped at Jordan Vocational High school in Columbus, Ga. Where he was his team's Offensive MVP as a senior … He was an All-City selection and a second-team All-Region pick … A Dandy Dozen selection, Cohen was selected to play in the Georgia vs. Alabama All-Star Game … He also lettered four times in track and field and twice in basketball.

Spencer Gatewood – OL – 6-4 – 310 – Altamont, Kan. – Fort Scott CC  (Labette County HS)

Gatewood comes to Southern after two years as an offensive linemen for Fort Scott Community College … A two-year starter for coach Curtis Horton, Gatewood was an All-Conference player last year for the Greyhounds … Prior to Fort Scott, Gatewood was a two-time All-District, All-Region and All-State pick, while being chosen as a team captain.

Marcos Gutierres – OL – 6-3 – 270 – Dodge City (Kan.) CC (Dodge City, Kan.)

Gutierres was a two-year starter and team captain for coach Gary Thomas and the Conquistadors … He was the Offensive Line MVP this season and was named an All-Conference pick … Gutierres was a three-year starter at Dodge City High School where he was a team captain … He was a first-team All-State left tackle, and was chosen to play in the K101 Bowl.

Elliott Hawkins – RB – 5-10 - 200 – Spiro, Okla. – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Spiro HS)

Hawkins comes to Southern after two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami … A two-year starter for the Norsemen and coach Ryan Held, Hawkins was a team captain as voted by his teammates and was a two-time All-Conference pick … The Offensive MVP as voted by his teammates, Hawkins finished his career with 1,568 rushing yards and 381 yards receiving … Prior to NEO, Hawkins was a three-sport letter winner at Spiro High School where he was an All-Conference and All-State selection … He was named to the All-Oklahoma team and was a participant in the Oklahoma All-State Game … He finished his career with 1,786 rushing yards and 403 receiving yards.

Justin Lord – RB – 5-10 – 195 – Augusta, Ga. – Fort Scott CC (Glenn Hills HS)

Originally a signee out of high school with Division I Savannah State, Lord redshirted this past season at Fort Scott CC … Prior to Fort Scott … Lord was an All-district and an All-State running back … Also a standout track athlete, he was a state champion in the 200m with a time of 21.60 … He will also be running track and field at Missouri Southern.

Austin Minor – LS – 5-9 – 200 – Baxter Springs, Kan. – Coffeyville CC (Baxter Springs HS)

Minor comes to Southern after two years at Coffeyville Community College where he played for coach Aaron Flores … The starter at long snapper for the Ravens, Minor had a tackle on special teams last year as a sophomore … A two-year starter, he was a two-time All-Conference pick and was three times the special teams player of the week … At Baxter Springs, he was a three-year starter and was a team captain, while being named All-Conference on the defensive line his senior season.

Deon Price – DB – 6-2, 185 – Austin, Texas – Cisco College (McCallum HS)

Price comes to Southern after two years at Cisco College in Cisco, Texas where he played for coach Scott Taylor … Prior to Cisco, Price was an All-District and All-State WR/DB, while being named to the state All-Star Team.

Ryan Solomon – S – 6-0 – 190 – Monrovia, Calif. – Citrus (Calif.) College (Monrovia HS)

Solomon comes to Southern after a season at Citrus College in California … He will have three years of eligibility after redshirting this past year … As a freshman in 2012, Solomon recorded 25 tackles, one tackle for a loss, and recovered a fumble while playing for coach Ron Ponciano and the Owls … Prior to Citrus, Solomon prepped at Monrovia High School where he was an All-District and All-County selection for coach Ryan Maddox … He is the son of Nichele Solomon and Gary Lindsey.

O'Shea Williams – DL – 6-0 – 300 – Katy, Texas – Blinn College (Cypress Lakes HS)

Williams comes to Southern after two years for coach Ronny Feldman at Blinn College in Texas … A two year starter at Blinn, Williams was a defensive captain and was a two-time All-Conference selection … He was the team's Defensive MVP and in two years, he finished his career with eight sacks, 30 tackles, 16 of them for a loss … At Cypress Lakes High School, Williams was a two-time All-District and All-Conference pick and was an All-State selection for coach Robert Blackshear … He was named a top 150 pick by rivals.com and was a team captain and the Defensive MVP … The son of Michelle Williams and Alfred Jackson, Williams will major in kinesiology at Southern.

Isaiah Anderson – DE – 6-2 – 245 – Port Gibson, Miss. - Coahoma (MS) CC (Port Gibson HS)

Anderson comes to Southern after two years at Coahoma Community College where he played for coach Freeman Horton … Last season, Anderson had 41 tackles, 22 solo, including one sack and 3.5 for a loss of 14 yards. 

Hayden Chandler – OT – 6-3 – 300 – DeSoto, Kan. – Coffeyville CC (DeSoto HS)

Chandler comes to Southern after two years starting for coach Aaron Flores at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas … A teammate of incoming Lion Austin Minor and James Williams, Chandler was an All-Conference lineman and helped lead an offensive line that saw the Ravens rush for 1,436 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2013 … He also had one tackle on defense.

Demecho Crawford – DL – 6-2 – 260 – Florissant, Mo. – Independence CC (McCleur North HS)

Crawford comes to Southern after two years at Independence Community College where he played for coach Steve Carson … Last season at Indy, Crawford had 13 tackles, eight solo, including one sac, three tackles for a loss of five yards and two pass break ups … Prior to Indy, Crawford prepped at McCleur North High School where he was a three-time All-Conference pick. 

Justin Davis – LB – 6-1 – 222 – Dallas, Texas – WT White High School

Davis was his team's MVP this past season and was an All-District and All-Region pick after finishing the season with 124 tackles, four forced fumbles and three interceptions.

Vince Gardella – DE – 6-4 – 255 – Pomona, Calif – Citrus College (Claremont HS)

Gardella comes to Southern after two years at Citrus College in California where he played for coach Ron Ponciano and the Owls and is a teammate of fellow signee Ryan Solomon … This past season for Citrus, Gardella had 20 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and 3.5 for a loss of 16 yards … Prior to Citrus, Gardella prepped two varsity seasons for the Wolfpack and Coach Mike Collins at Claremont High School … He earned All-Sierra League Honorable Mention honors … Gardella is the son of Shanette Oliver and Jim Gardel and plans to major in criminal justice at Southern.

Sylvester Hagan – LB – 6-2 – 230 – New Albany, Ohio – Palomar (Calif.) College (New Albany HS)

Hagan comes to Southern after playing two years for coach Joe Early and the Comets … Last season for the Comets, Hagan garnered 67 tackles, 25 solo, tying for second-most on the team.

Jarrell Jackson – OL – 6-4 – 255 – Marrero, La. – Higgins High School

Jackson was a an All-District, All-State and All-Star Team selection, where he was the team captain … As a junior, he was a first-team 5A All-District and All-State pick. 

Demetrus Johnson – LB – 6-1 – 230 – Columbus, Ohio – Alan Hancock JC (Brookhaven HS)

Johnson comes to Southern after two years playing for coach Kris Dutra at Alan Hancock Junior College in California … It is the same school that current Lion Chris Barnwell played at … Last year, he led the team with 100 tackles, 45 solo, including 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles, one recovery … Prior to Alan Hancock, Johnson prepped at Brookhaven High School in Columbus, Ohio where he was an All-City, All-District and All-State pick.

Cory Keyes – LB – 5-11 – 200 – Moore, Okla. – Southmoore High School

Keys was a three-year letter winner at Southmoore High School … His senior season he as an All-State and All-Region pick while he was named a team captain … He had 88 tackles and also carried a 3.63 GPA while being named an All-City selection. 

Lars Lindquist – OL – 6-3 – 290 – Santa Fe, New Mexico – Santa Rosa JC (Saint Michaels High School)

Lindquist comes to Southern after two years at Santa Rosa Junior College where he was a two-year starter playing for coach Lenny Wagner… He played on both the offensive and defensive lines and recorded 16 tackles, two sacks and added an interception … Prior to Santa Rosa, Lindquist prepped at Saint Michaels High School where he was a two-year starter for coach Joey Fernandez … He was an All-State selection and was a nominee for the Offensive Lineman of the Year … Also a standout wrestler and track and field athlete, Lindquist helped his wrestling team to a state championship … The son of Scott and Amy Lindquist, his father played soccer at Virginia Tech, before playing professional soccer in Portugal … He plans to major in English at Southern. 

De-Jon Mitchell – LB – 6-1 – 225 – Los Angeles, Calif. – Santa Monica College (Fairfax HS)

Mitchell comes to Southern after two years at Santa Monica College in California, where he played for coach Gifford Lindheim … Last season as a sophomore, Mitchell recorded 31 tackles, 18 solo, including 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for a loss and one fumble recovery.

Marquis Montgomery – DL – 6-0 – 292 – Topeka, Kan. – Hutchinson CC (Highland Park HS)

Montgomery comes to Southern after two seasons at Hutchinson Community College where he played for coach Rion Rhoades … Last season he helped the Blue Dragons to an 8-4 record and helped lead an offensive line that saw Hutchinson rush for 1,879 yards and 25 touchdowns … he also saw time on defense where he had 12 tackles, a half a sack and 3.5 tackles for a loss of ten yards.

Jonah Nightengale – LB – 6-0 – 205 – Citrus Springs, Fla. – Lecanto High School

Nightengale comes to Southern after starting for four years at Lecanto High School for coach McKinley Rolle … He played both running back and linebacker at Lecanto where he was an All-County and All-Conference selection … Also an All-County wrestler, he helped his team place sixth in the Florida State Championships … The son of Ronald and Audra Nightengale, he is undecided on his major at Southern.

Dajuan Perryman – LB – 5-10 – 200 – Los Angeles, Calif. – Santa Monica College (Gardena HS)

Perryman comes to Southern after two seasons at Santa Monica College where he played for coach Gifford Lindheim and was a teammate with De-Jon Mitchell … Last season as a sophomore, Perryman finished the season with 40 tackles, 25 solo, including 2.5 sacks, and 9.5 tackles for a loss of 21 yards … he also added one forced fumble. 

Razean Prather – DE – 6-0 – 240 – Ripley, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi CC (Ripley HS)

Prather (Ray-Ray) comes to Southern after starting two seasons at Northeast Mississippi CC for coach Ricky Smithers and the Tigers … Last season, Prather had 43 tackles, 34 solo, including three sacks, 12.5 tackles for a loss of 33 yards and one interception … He was also the Defensive MVP of the MACJC All-Star Game. 

Johnathan Pruden – S – 6-2 – 230 – Burlington, NJ – Los Angeles Pierce CC (Burlington HS)

Pruden comes to Southern after playing two years for coach Efrain Martinez at LA Pierce CC in California … Last season as a sophomore, Pruden had 18 tackles, including one sack and five tackles for a loss of 33 yards, he also added one pass break up. 

Kyjuan (Key-Juan) Tate – LB – 6-2 – 230 – Chicago, Ill. – Butte (Calif. ) College (Hubbard HS)

Tate comes to Southern after two years playing for coach Jeff Jordan at Butte College in California … This past season, Tate helped lead the team to a California Junior College State Title, a 12-0 record and Butte was named Co-National Champions … As a sophomore, Tate had 33 tackles, 10 solo, including four for a loss of 14 yards and one pass breakup. 

Rolandeis Toliver – DT – 6-2 – 270 – Horn Lake, Miss. – NW Mississippi CC (Horn Lake HS)

Toliver comes to Southern after two seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College for coach Jack Wright … Last season at Northwest, Toliver recorded 11 tackles … Prior to Northwest, Toliver prepped at Horn Lake High School for coach John Cooley … helped the Eagles to a 6-5 record in his senior season, their first winning season in 10 years...a first team all-region and all-district selection...as a senior, recorded 89 tackles (39 solo) and tallied a career-high 18 total tackles vs. Hernando.

James Williams – C – 6-0 – 270 – Kansas City, Kan. – Coffeyville CC (Sumner Academy)

Williams comes to Southern after two years starting for coach Aaron Flores at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas … A teammate of incoming Lion Austin Minor and Hayden Chandler, Williams helped lead an offensive line that saw the Ravens rush for 1,436 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2013.

Morris Willis – DE – 6-3 – 220 – Owasso, Okla. – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Owasso HS)

Willis comes to Southern after two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M playing for coach Ryan Held … A teammate of incoming Lion Elliott Hawkins, Willis had 28 tackles as a sophomore, 13 solo, including 1 sack and an average of 4.7 tackles per game.
