Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team out scored 12th ranked Central Missouri 47-19 in the second half and erased a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the Mules 78-61 in MIAA action.
Southern (6-0, 2-0 MIAA) was led by the trio of Skyler Bowlin, Jason Adams and Keane Thomann. Bowlin scored 21 and dished out four assists with four steals, while Adams scored 19 with four three's. Thomann went 7-13 from the field and scored 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half.
Central (5-3, 0-2 MIAA) is 0-2 in MIAA action for the first time since the 08-09 season when the Mules ended up a Final Four team. Bryce Brunz scored 20 points, while Boo Hunter and Joel Barkers scored 13 and 12, respectively.
Southern went down 24-19 at the 9:30 mark of the first half and trailed 30-19 at the eight minute mark. The Mules eventually led by 13 (42-29) after a jumper by Tyrone Young with two minutes left in the half and would take a 41-32 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Mules lead was 14 (47-33) after a free throw by Barkers with 16 minutes left, before the Lions' defense kicked into overdrive. Southern quickly turned a 14-point deficit into a one-point lead four minutes later as a three from Bowlin made the score 50-49, Lions.
A layup from Hinsey at the 8:47 mark made the Southern lead nine (58-49), and the lead was 18 after a free throw from Marquis Addison gave the Lions a 76-58 lead with 1:15 left to go.
After allowing Central Missouri to score 42 in the first half, the Lions' defense limited the Mules to just 19 points in the second half. Southern out scored the Mules 30-16 in the paint and forced 18 turnovers, scoring 20 points off of the miscues. The Lions had 11 steals and limited Central to just two second-chance points.
The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday evening, playing host to Missouri Western at 7:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
