Missouri Southern golf signs two

Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern golf coach Mike Wheeler has announced the signing of Ben Starkey and Ethan Hutcheson to national letters of intent to attend Southern and play golf beginning in the fall of 2012.

Starkey is a 6-0, 165 pound native of Webb City where he earned four letters at Webb City High School for coach Wayne Smith and the Cardinals. A three-year state qualifier (senior season still yet to be played), Starkey has been a three year All-Conference selection and a two year All-District pick. He was the individual sectional champion as a junior.

The son of Bart (Sr.) and Stacy Starkey, Ben is undecided on his future major at Southern. His brother Bart is a member of the MSSU football team.

Hutcheson is a 5-7, 130 pound native of Carl Junction where he earned three letters for coach Ryan Jones at Carl Junction High School. Also a two-year letterwinner on the football team, Hutcheson saw time in his freshman and sophomore years on the baseball and basketball teams.

A state qualifier in 2011, he was the district runner up and was a first-team All-Conference pick. As a sophomore, he was second team All-Conference and was the conference Newcomer of the Year. He also holds the distinction as the only CJHS player to hit a hole-in-one in competitive play. The son of Randy and Christie Hutcheson, Ethan plans to major in business at Southern.

"Both Ben and Ethan are quality students, athletes, and citizens," Wheeler said. "I have watched them both grow up in the game of golf and am extremely pleased adding them to the Lions Men's Golf roster for the fall of 2012. I think it is good they made this decision now. They can play their Spring High School season without stressing over which school they will attend in the fall."
