Smithville, Mo. -- With rain cancelling the final day of the 2013 MIAA Golf Championships, the Missouri Southern golf team finished in eighth place after yesterday's results were made final as the tournament was held at Paradise Pointe Golf Club in Smithville, Mo.
The Lions were led by junior Ryan Buerk as he shot a first round, two-over 74 and a second-round 75 to finish day one tied for 17th individually at 149. Buerk was named an All-MIAA selection for his efforts throughout the season.
Junior Ryan Russell finished tied for 24th overall with a two-round 151, while senior Andy Hogenmiller and junior Andrew Maier both carded a 158 in the tournament. Freshman Ben Starkey rebounded from round one to two, and shot ten strokes better over the course to finish the tournament with a 160.
Central Oklahoma won the tournament in commanding fashion as the Bronchos shot nine-under as a team on the first 18 and finished the tournament with an eight-under 568, 18 strokes in front of second place Central Missouri (586) to earn the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Golf Championships. Lindenwood finished third at 591, while Washburn (593), and Nebraska-Kearney (597) round out the top five.
Northeastern State was sixth, followed by Missouri Western, Southern, Lincoln, Southwest Baptist, Pittsburg State and Fort Hays.
Southern finished in sixth place in the final MIAA team standings (listed below). They capture the Sonic Trophy Series point over Pittsburg State as the Gorillas were tenth.
Southern will wait to see if Buerk has earned an individualist spot for the Super Regional, held in Kenosha, Wisc. on May 6-8.
