Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's track and field team sit in fourth place with 15 points after day two of the 2010 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin.
Brennan Benkert paced the Lions with a win in the 5k, racing to a time of 14:56.63, defeating second place by more than three seconds. Josh Mathis was sixth in the event, while Nick Niggemann was 12th.
Aki Nummela stormed to the second-fastest time in prelims of the 800m, and qualified for tomorrow's finals with a time of 1:58.03. Jordan Patton qualified for the finals of both the 60m and 200m dash, sixth best in the 60's and third fastest in the 200.
Jerry Jones (4th) and Taylor McClelland (8th) both had jumps of farther than 46 feet in the triple jump, while Kyle Hancock and Tyler Burgess placed 13th and 16th in the weight throw. Central Missouri's Drew Frizzell and Pittsburg State's Brian Allen both set the MIAA record for the weight with a heave of 20.57 meters. Frizzell took home the title with a better second toss.
Kevin Wright just missed qualifying in the 60 meter hurdles, but qualified fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.10. DJ Bland also qualified for the finals with a time of 51.51. Andrew Wright missed out qualifying by nine one hundredths of a second.
Brandon Weaver placed 11th in the prelims of the 600 yard run, while the DMR team placed eighth.
Central Missouri (54) is in first place after five events, with 23 point lead over second place Pittsburg State (31). Emporia is third with 21, while Southern (15), Southwest Baptist (12), Northwest Missouri (11), Fort Hays (7) and Truman (4) round out the team scores.
Action concludes tomorrow afternoon as events begin at Noon in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
