Joplin, Mo. -The Missouri Southern softball squad (5-3) swept day one competition at the 2011 MSSU Boarder Battle, defeating Rockhurst University 9-8 in the opener and downing Southeastern Oklahoma 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Lions exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third off of three hits to pull within a run of Rockhurst at 5-4. Junior Alysha Poteat hit a bases loaded grand slam, the second for Southern this season, to account for all four runs. The Lions would then score another run in the bottom of the fifth as junior Nicole Reeddoubled to right center scoring junior Brianna Fulkerson. Then in the sixth inning Southern would tack on two more runs. The first run would be scored by junior Kiley Siebenaler as she came home on a balk. The second run was brought in by a ground out by junior Breanna Volkmann, scoring freshman Brooklyn Farrell. The Lions would then fall behind in the top of the seventh 8-7 before striking for two runs to end the game. Sophomore Dawn Grasswould hit a two-run walk-off homerun scoring fellow sophomore Jessica Brooks.
Senior Tiffany Bennett worked three innings for the Lions giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits. She struck out three Rockhurst batters while walking none. Sophomore Kayce Moore worked 2 1/3 innings in relief allowing just two hits and facing just nine batters. Junior Nicole Reed (2-1) got the win for Southern. Reed pitched 1 2/3 inning giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out three.
In the nightcap the Lions would strike first scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning on a homerun by Grass, her third on the year. The Savage Storm would then tie the game in the top of the third at 1-1. Southern would then take the lead again in the bottom of the fifth as Fulkerson would score on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Reed, and Poteat would hit a single up the middle to bring in Brooks.
Nicole Reed went the distance in game two earning her third victory on the season. Reed gave up just four hits and faced 27 batters striking out 10 and walking only three.
The Lions play a two games to finish up their part in the 2011 Boarder Battle. The first game is at 2pm as they take on the Aggies of Cameron University. That is followed by a re-match from the season opener as the Lions take on the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State at 4pm. The Lions and Bulldogs split the season opening series in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Southern won the opener 3-1, then dropped the nightcap 11-2.
