Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern softball team opened up the seventh annual Teri (Mathis) Zenner Memorial Classic with a pair of wins on Sunday at Lea Kungle Field.
In game one, the pitchers from both the Lions (9-5) and the visiting Prairie Stars of Illinois-Springfield showed off their pitching prowess.
In the second game, MSSU took on Wisconsin-Parkside. Southern got another complete game effort from their starting pitcher, this time from junior Nicole Reed, and Roark drove in two runs at the plate as the Lions defeated the Rangers 3-0.
Reed (5-1) struck out eight batters while surrendering just two hits and walking one. Southern struck first in the third inning when sophomore Dawn Grass singled in sophomore Breanna Volkmann. Roark tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth frame when she doubled to right field bringing in sophomore Jessica Brooks and junior Brianna Fulkerson.
Offensively for the Lions in game two, Roark and Brooks each had two hits to lead the way.
Next up, Southern will play Central Oklahoma at 5 p.m. and Drury at 7 p.m. in day two of the Zenner Memorial Classic.
