Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions (13-13, 0-2) dropped their MIAA opening double header to No. 21-ranked Nebraska Omaha today, 2-0 and 11-4.
Missouri Southern allowed just two runs, one earned, to the explosive Mavericks offense in the first game. Junior Nicole Reed (9-4) threw a complete game and allowed four hits while striking out five, adding to her league leading mark of 90 strike outs on the season. Reed didn't allow a run to be scored after the third inning and only allowed two hits after the third frame as well.
Junior Lydia Niemegeers led the way offensively for the Lions, as she collected two of Southern's five hits. Seniors Megan Roark and Dawn Grass, along with junior Brianna Fulkerson recorded the other three hits. Roark recorded her fourth double on the season.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, however Southern took the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on a fielding error by the UNO center fielder. The Lions would add one more in the home half of the third when Grass scored on a Nicole Reed single to right field.
The Mavericks just wouldn't go away, as UNO tied the game in the top half of the fourth before Southern would retake the lead in home half of the fifth.
UNO would then tally four runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to record the 11-4 victory over Southern.
Senior Tiffany Bennett (3-6) went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out two. Nicole Reed pitched one inning of relief allowing four runs on four hits and one strike out and sophomore Kayce Moore came in to get the final UNO out.
