Southern Softball Splits Pair with Blue Tigers

Jefferson City, Mo. - Missouri Southern softball (22-17, 5-5 MIAA) split a pair of conference games with the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University today in Jefferson City falling 3-0 in the first game and winning the night cap 7-6 in extra frames.

Game One

Game one saw the Lions get eight hits but couldn't string them together to push across a run as Lincoln downed the Lions 3-0.

Southern got another solid start inside the circle from junior Nicole Reed (16-5) as she gave up three runs on only six hits while striking out five and walking none.

The Lions' offense was led by junior Breanna Volkmann and sophomore Jessica Brooks as they each recorded two hits.  Juniors Brianna Fulkerson and Brooke Hurley, senior Megan Roark, and freshman Madison Reed each recorded a hit.

Game Two

Senior Tiffany Bennett (4-9) started the night cap for the Lions as she threw four innings allowing just four runs on nine hits and walking none.  Sophomore Kayce Moore came in and pitched one inning of scoreless ball striking out one and allowing just a single to right center.  Nicole Reed pitched the remaining four innings in relief, to record the win, allowing two hits and two unearned runs.  Reed struck out two bringing her total on the day to seven and season total to 145.  Reed's 145 ties her with Webb City product Hailey Stanley (2002) for sixth on the single-season leader board in strike outs.

The Lions' bats lit up in game two as they connected for 15 hits and seven runs.  Southern struck for four runs in the top of the third inning to get the scoring started.  Junior Lydia Niemegeers singled to center to start the inning, Madison Reed then sacrificed herself to move Niemegeers to second.  Niemegeers then scored on a single to right field by Volkmann.  Volkmann then stole second and Brooks walked, they both advanced on a Blue Tigers' wild pitch.  Roark then hit a three run home run to right field to cap the scoring in the third.

Southern then got two more runs in the next frame as Niemegeers scored on a Volkmann sacrifice fly to left and Madison Reed scored on a single by Brooks.

Lincoln scored one in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6 and send it to extra innings.

Roark led off with a single to right in the ninth followed by a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Reed that moved over junior Kiley Siebenaler, who was pinch running for Roark.  Hurley then singled up the middle moving the runs up one base.  Junior Alysha Poteat then singled in the go ahead run as the ball found the grass in right field scoring Siebenaler.

Nicole Reed would then pitch a 1-2-3 inning against the Blue Tigers in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

Southern will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Kirksville for the MIAA North Crossover hosted by Truman State University.  Game times and opponents can be found at
