Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions softball team (7-16) swept a pair of games today from Wisconsin-Parkside (1-15) 9-6 and 8-0 at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex in Joplin.
Lions win game one against Wisconsin-Parkside 9-6, behind a 3-for-4 performance at the dish for senior Brooke Hurley. Hurley scored two runs and had two RBIs including a two run homerun in the bottom of the first that score senior Lydia Niemegeers. Niemegeers went two for three with two RBIs and sophomore Brooklyn Farrell score two runs and batted in two runs as the lions platted nine runs on twelve hits. Joining Niemegeers and Hurley with multiple hits was sophomore Shelby Romines and senior Alysha Poteat, each with two.
Junior Kayce Moore got the score for the lions and recorded her first win on the season going six innings allowing six runs, five earned, on eleven hits while striking out one. Sophomore Haley Pypes recorded her first save of the season allowing no runs no hits with one strike out.
The Lions offense exploded in game two as they scored eight runs on nine hits and recorded eight RBIs. Niemegeers went 3-for-4 in game two to finish 5-for-7 on the day. Romines went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish while senior Breanna Volkmann, Niemegeers, and Pypes all recorded two RBIs a piece.
Junior Hannah Cooke got the start in the circle for the Lions and earned her first win of the year going the distance while giving up four hits and striking out four.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday as they host the Arkansas Tech University Golden Sun with games scheduled to start at 3pm.
