Lions Softball Splits with Golden Suns
Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (8-17) salvaged a split the the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (10-12) Friday evening dropping game one 7-5 before taking game two 3-2 in eight innings on a walk off double by sophomore Shelby Romines.
Game one saw the Golden Suns strike first with three runs in both the second and third innings as they held off Missouri Southern for a 7-5 win at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex Friday afternoon.
The Lions answered the Golden Suns with three runs in the home frame of the second and a single run in the third before plating a run in the bottom of the seventh to fall just shy, 7-5.
Seniors Breanna Volkmann and Alysha Poteat led the way offensively for the Lions in game one. Volkmann finished game one 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs while Poteat went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a solo home run the third inning.
Junior Kayce Moore got the start for the Lions in the circle and went 3 1/3 innings giving up all seven runs on 10 Arkansas Tech hits. Sophomore Haley Pypes came in relief and pitched 3 2/3 innings shutting the Golden Suns down, allowing zero runs and zero hits while striking out three.
The Lions got a walk off double from Romines in the bottom of the eighth inning to salvage the split with Arkansas Tech, winning 3-2.
Volkmann and Poteat once again led the way offensively going 2-for-3 at the dish while Romines added two RBIs and senior Lydia Niemegeers accounted for the other RBI for Southern.
The double to left center by Romines scored seniors Brianna Fulkerson, who was placed on second base due to the international tie breaker, and Brooke Hurley, who reached on a fielding error by the Golden Suns shortstop.
Junior Hannah Cooke got the start and went the distance for the Lions, winning her second straight start. Cooke allowed two runs, both unearned, on seven hits and struck out one Arkansas Tech hitter.
The Lions will be back in action next Thursday as they host Ouachita Baptist in a single game at Lea Kungle Field and the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex at 4pm.
