Lions Drop Pair to #20 Emporia State Hornets
Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (13-26, 4-6 MIAA) dropped a pair of MIAA games to No. 20-ranked Emporia State University (25-7, 12-0 MIAA) this afternoon, 12-0 and 9-0, at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
ESU allowed just two Southern base runners in the first game as senior Lydia Niemegeers drew a hit by pitch in the first inning and a walk in the fourth.
Junior Kayce Moore (2-9) got the start for the Lions going three innings allowing just three runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out two Hornets. Junior Hannah Cooke pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and sophomore Arlisa Arwood finished the game allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit.
In game two the Lions would record their lone hit on the day as senior Brooke Hurley punched a base right through the right side of the Emporia State infield. Hurley would be both base runners the Lions would get on base as she earned a walk in the second inning of the contest.
Getting the start of the Lions was sophomore Haley Pypes (8-6) as she went 2 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits while striking out one ESU hitter. Sophomore Chasity Henson came in relief and pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with one strike out.
The Lions will honor both their seniors and all returning alumni with a special recognition of the 1992 NCAA D-II National Championship team's 20th anniversary on Saturday as Southern hosts the Missouri Western State University Griffons. Senior day festivities start at 12:45 with the alumni and the 1992 team being honored in-between games.
