Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (13-28, 4-8 MIAA) dropped a pair of rain soaked games to No. 17-ranked Missouri Western Griffons (33-6, 16-2 MIAA) 11-0 and 1-0 Saturday evening at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
The day started with rain in the area that pushed the start of the games from 1pm to 4pm and saw both the 2012 senior class and the 1992 NCAA National Championship team, along with other softball alumni, honored prior to the first pitch.
The Griffons got off to a fast start scoring five runs in the first two innings before the rain came again and suspended play for another 1.5 hours. After coming out of the delay Western continued their hot streak scoring six runs and holding the Lions scoreless.
Seniors Breanna Volkmann and Kiley Siebenaler recorded both hits for Southern while junior Hannah Cooke suffered the loss as she went 1 2/3 innings allowing five runs, all earned, on four hits. Junior Kayce Moore came in relief and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on eight hits.
The nightcap came down to the final inning as the Griffons loaded the bases and scored the go ahead run on a walk.
Sophomore Haley Pypes got the start for the Lions and went the distance allowing one run, unearned, on four hits with seven strikeouts.
