Lions Sweep Lady Miners

Joplin, Mo. –  The Missouri Southern Lions (15-28, 4-8 MIAA) swept the visiting Lady Miners of Missouri S&T (14-29), 3-2 (11 innings) and 5-4, on Wednesday evening at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.

Game One

Game one saw two pitchers duel it out as the Lady Miners would strike first in the fourth to go up 1-0, but Southern would answer in the home half of the inning as senior Alysha Poteat would single in fellow senior Brooke Hurley to tie the game.  The Lions would have opportunities to score in fifth but they would strand runners at first and second.

 The game would go into extra innings where S&T would score first in the eighth on a RBI single to third, but the Lions would answer.  In the home half as sophomore Brooklyn Farrell, who was placed on second due to international tie breaker rule, would advance to third on a single by senior Brianna Fulkerson and then score on a throwing error by the Lady Miners' pitcher on the same play.

The Lions would make a play at third in the ninth to keep Missouri S&T off the scoreboard and the Lady Miners would return the favor to Southern in the bottom of the tenth inning throwing out the would be winning run at the plate.

In the eleventh inning senior Breanna Volkmann would be placed on second and then advance to third on a wild pitch.  After a ground out and a strikeout Volkmann would score the winning run on a single to left by Hurley.

Sophomore Haley Pypes (9-7) would go the distance for the Lions pitching 11 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with 11 strikeouts.

Game Two

Game two saw S&T strike first again scoring a run in the second before the Lions would answer with a run in the second , one in the third, and two in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.  Poteat would get a RBI in the second on a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Shelby Romines and Romines would get a RBI single through the left side of the Lady Miners defense that scored Fulkerson.  In the fourth inning Farrell would score on a wild pitch.  The final run in the fourth came off a walk by Fulkerson, as the S&T pitcher was walking back to the circle Fulkerson made a play for second and got caught in a rundown that allowed Volkmann to cross the plate.

The Lady Miners would tie the game in the sixth scoring three runs in the top half of the inning.  The Lions would win the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as Poteat would single through the right side to score fellow senior Lydia Niemegeers for the winning run.

Junior Kayce Moore would get the start for Southern  and then come back in relief to pick up the win going 5 2/3 innings while allowing one run, unearned, on five hits and striking out three.  Junior Hannah Cooke came in relief of Moore in the fifth inning and went 1 1/3 innings allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits.

On The Day

Fulkerson would go 3-for-8 at the plate and Romines would finish 3-for-9 to lead the Lions.  Poteat would finish the day with three RBIs, including the game winner in the night cap, while Hurley would account for the one Southern RBI, including the game winner in the opener, and Romines the other to make five RBIs for the Lions on the day.

 Next Up

The Lions travel to Southwest Baptist University on Saturday for a pair of games starting at 1pm and then head to Warrensburg, Mo. to tackle the Jennies of Central Missouri on Sunday with games there starting at 1pm as well.
