Lions Softball Swept at Southwest Baptist
Bolivar, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (15-32, 4-12 MIAA) dropped a pair of MIAA games to the Southwest Baptist Bearcats (15-27, 6-12 MIAA) 4-3 and 4-2 at the SBU Softball Field Wednesday afternoon.
Southern fell behind the Bearcats 3-0 in the bottom of the third before getting on the board in the top half of the fourth as sophomore Haley Pypes singled in senior Lydia Niemegeers. Southwest Baptist would answer back in the home half of the frame to make it 4-1.
The Lions would attempt to rally in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with no outs. After a pop out senior Brooke Hurley would single to centerfield to score sophomore Brooklyn Farrell and senior Brianna Fulkerson would score on the same play after an error by the SBU catcher. That would be as close as Southern would get as they would fall 4-3 in game one.
Senior Breanna Volkmann would lead the way at the plate for Southern in game one going 3-for-4 while Pypes finished 2-for-3 at the dish. Pypes and Hurley both notched RBIs in game one as well.
Pypes (9-9) got the start for the Lions going six innings allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with seven strike outs.
After falling behind in the nightcap 2-0 in the fourth Southern answered in the visitor half of the fifth tying the game at 2-2 as freshman Brooke Swadley scored on an error by the SBU centerfielder and Farrell scored on a single up the middle by Fulkerson.
Junior Hannah Cooke would get the start for the Lions going five innings allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits with two strikeouts. Junior Kayce Moore would come in relief and pitch one inning allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and suffer the loss.
On The Day
Pypes led the team at the plate going 2-for-5 on the day along with a RIB while Volkmann went 3-for-8. Niemegeers would notch the only extra base hit for the Lions on the day with a double.
The Lions will make their final road trip of the season heading to Washburn University on Saturday with games starting at 2:30 pm. Southern will then travel to Hays, Kansas to tackle the Tigers of Fort Hays State University on Sunday at 1pm.
