Warrensburg, Mo. - The Lions would take the lead twice in the second stanza but Central Missouri (10-9, 6-7 MIAA) had an answer each time as the Jennies handed Missouri Southern (10-7, 8-5 MIAA) a 69-63 loss in Warrensburg Wednesday night.
After a back and forth first half the Lions took a 31-27 halftime lead into the locker room after sophomore Kelby Fritz connected on three free throws and senior Afton Baldwin connected from downtown to give Southern the halftime lead.
As a team the Lions where 11-of-28 from the field for 39.3 percent including a 3-for-10 perfromence from three point range.
The Jennies came out of the locker room fired up and on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 35-31 with 17:08 left in the game before Baldwin connected from downtown to stop the Jennies run. Southern would lead twice at 47-45 on a Lovejoy lay-up at 10:37 and at 49-48 on a tip-in by senior LaTice Jones at 9:09 mark.
For the game the Jennies out shot Southern 44.4 percent (24-of-54) to 41.1 percent (23-of-56) and Central also out rebounded the Lions 35-33.
Rice led the Lions in scoring with 18 while Jones added 12. Junior Michelle Hedgecock, Lovejoy, and Jones all secured six boards for Southern.
The Lions will return to action Saturday night as they host Southwest Baptist in their annual "Pink Night". Tip off is 5:30 PM.
