Last Second Shot Dooms Lions
Joplin, Mo. -- A last second shot by the Lincoln Blue Tigers (6-1, 2-1 MIAA) spelled defeat for the Missouri Southern Lions (5-5, 1-3 MIAA) Saturday afternoon in Joplin, as Southern fell 67-66 to the Blue Tigers.
Southern was led by freshman guard Haley Weathers as she scored a team high 16 points and junior forward Erin Rice added 15. Also scoring in double figures for the Green & Gold were junior guard Tatianna Washington with 15 and sophomore forward Jessica Bell with 11.
Lincoln led by six early in the first half before Southern would go on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 13:20 left in the first half. After three straight layups by the Blue Tigers to stretch the lead back to six at 15-9 with 9:06 left Southern would go on a 9-0 run to take a three point lead at 18-15 with 6:32 left to play. For the next three minutes the Lions and Lincoln would trade buckets and the lead until Rice connected on a jumper from junior guard Dysyan Malone to take the first half lead for good at 25-23 with 2:29 left to play and would take a 31-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Southern would continue their hot streak out of the locker room as Washington connceted on her first three pointer as a Lion and Bell nailed a jumper in the paint to up the lead to seven with 18:03 left in the game. The Blue Tigers would chip away at that lead before Southern would widen it back up to seven with just five minutes left at 59-52 on a free throw by Rice. Lincoln would close the game out on a 12-5 run and steal the win away from the Lions for the first time ever in Joplin.
Southern will be back in action on December 19th as they host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University at 5:30pm at The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
