Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (7-18, 3-16 MIAA) dropped their final home game of the season, 67-58, to the Fort Hays State Tigers (19-7, 11-7 MIAA) Saturday afternoon inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
The Lions and Tigers played a close first half until a layup by sophomore Shatara Stone tied the game at 13-13 at the 12:19 mark and on the next trip down the floor junior Dysyan Malone would hit a layup and get the harm to give the Lions a three point lead, 16-13, with 11:53 to play in the half. Southern would dominate the rest of the half pushing their lead up to 10 points, 29-19, on a pair of free throws by Stone with just under two minutes left in the first stanza.
At the break the Lions were led by Stone with 12 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season.
Fort Hays would go on a 7-0 run to start the second half and take a one point lead, at 32-31 just over three minutes into the final frame before Malone and Stone would combine for the next five points to regain the lead and push that lead up to five points three more times as the Tigers started to make a comeback bid by going inside to Kate Lehman.
FHSU would take the lead for good, 53-50, on a three pointer by Kimber Weiser at the 7:37 mark and never look back.
The Lions will be back in action next Saturday, February 25, at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.
