Women's basketball picked 9th in MIAA Preseason Polls

Preseason Interview with Interim Head Coach Ronda Hubbard

Kansas City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women's basketball team has been picked to finish ninth in both the coaches and media polls as the MIAA released its preseason polls today.

Southern returns eight letterwinners from a year ago, including five seniors and four starters. Returning six of their top seven leading scorers from a year ago, the Lions return All-MIAA candidates in senior frontcourt players Dominique Mosley and Shonte Clay while also welcoming in a talented crop of newcomers. Longtime associate head coach Ronda Hubbard moves into the spot of interim head coach this year as she looks to continue the strong tradition of winning left by retiring head coach Maryann Mitts.

Emporia State was picked to win the league in the coaches poll, while Central Missouri was picked to win the league by the media. In the coaches' poll, Central Missouri was second, followed by Washburn, Fort Hays State, Pittsburg State, Northeastern State, Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Southern and Southwest Baptist round out the top ten. Central Oklahoma, Lincoln, Lindenwood and Nebraska-Kearney are the final four teams in the coaches poll.

Central Missouri grabbed 13 of the 27 first-place votes in the media poll as Emporia State and UCM flip spots in the media poll as the Jennies took the top spot in the media poll and ESU was second. Washburn was third in the media poll, followed by Fort Hays State, Pittsburg State, Northeastern State, Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Southern and Southwest Baptist round out the top ten. Central Oklahoma, Lincoln, Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood finished out the poll.

The Lions had 72 votes in the coaches poll, 18 behind eighth-place Missouri Western. In the media poll, the Lions had 171 votes, 16 behind eighth-place Missouri Western.

Southern will open their season on Oct. 30 at home when the Lions host Livin' The Dream in an exhibition game. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 pm at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Lions will also travel to SEC member Arkansas on Nov. 3 to take on the Razorbacks at 2 p.m. in an exhibition before opening up the regular season on Nov. 8 at Drury. The Lions host Southwestern Oklahoma on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. for their home opener.
