Southern soccer opens up 2012 season at UMSL & Quincy
Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern soccer team will open the 2012 season under head coach Alese Woolard Friday evening as the Lions travel to UMSL for a 5pm start at Don Dallas Stadium. The Lions then travel north to take on Quincy University (IL) on Sunday at noon at North Campus Field.
Coming off a 9-3 finish to the 2011 campaign, the Lions will look to carry that momentum into the opening weekend of action. With six seniors on the team, Woolard looks for them to carry the load this year and fullfill their goal of reaching the National Tournament.
Led by fourth-year head coach Pete Lessentine, the Tritons finished 2011 with a 9-9 overall record, going 8-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. With only two seniors on the roster, the Tritons are a very young team. The Lions are 1-3 all-time versus the Tritons with their lone win being in 2006 1-0 at home.
With six consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances, Quincy finished 2011 with a 15-5-2 overall record, going 11-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Lions are 0-2 all-time versus the Hawks with their defeats coming in 2000 and last year when they fell 2-0 at home.
