Joplin, Mo.- The Missouri Southern Lions soccer team won its first game of the year 2-1 over the Fort Hays State Tigers this afternoon at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
Scoring in the 39th minute for the Lions, senior forward Natascha Lord scored her first goal of the year, giving the Lions a 1-0. Outshooting the Tigers 6-4, the Lions led 1-0 at halftime, their first lead at halftime on the year.
Scoring in the 60th minute for the Tigers, senior forward Sade Humphrey tied the game up at 1. As the game wound down under 10 minutes left in regulation, the Lions were set up for a corner kick by senior forward Cortney Sanders, who proceeded to kick the ball into senior midfielder Candis Clark, who headed the ball in for the go-ahead goal, her first of the year, making the score 2-1 in the 82nd minute.
Keeping the Tigers off the board the final eight minutes, the Tigers held on for the 2-1 win, their first of the year overall and in conference.
The Lions (1-5-1, 1-2 MIAA) return to MIAA play Sunday afternoon at Fred G. Hughes Stadium when they take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers at noon.
