Joplin, Mo.- The Missouri Southern Lions soccer team picked up its second win of the year Sunday afternoon at Fred G. Hughes Stadium with a 3-0 shutout over Nebraska-Kearney.
Behind a hat trick from senior forward Megan Stueve, the Lions were able to keep the Lopers off the board for their first shutout of the year. Scoring in the 25th minute of the first half, Stueve used a rebound shot from freshman defender Michaela Altvater to notch her second goal of the year as the Lions took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Halfway through the second half, in the 72nd minute, the Lions made the game 2-0 on Stueve's second goal of the day when she used a breakaway to get the ball past Lopers goalie Marissa Niday.
Staying active offensively all day, Stueve notched her third goal of the day in the 83rd minute getting past the defense to find the back of the net to make the game 3-0. The 16 shots on the day were a season-high for the Lions, suprassing their previous high of 15 vs. UMSL.
The Lions (2-5-1, 2-2 MIAA) return to MIAA action Friday afternoon when they travel to Kirksville to take on Truman at 3 p.m.
