Southern soccer drops first MIAA contest falling 4-1 at Nebraska-Kearney

Kearney, Neb. - The Missouri Southern Lions soccer team dropped their first MIAA match this afternoon at Nebraska-Kearney losing 4-1 at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

After a scoreless first twenty minutes, the Lopers (4-4, 1-2 MIAA) would add two quick goals in the 22nd and 25th minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead. The Lions (2-4-2, 1-1-2) would respond in the 45th minute when senior forward Tiffany Laughlin would fire Southern's lone shot of the first half past UNK's goalkeeper Katelin Mielke for her second goal of the season. Sophomore defender Michaela Altvater would find Laughlin thirty yards out on the left wing to pick up her first assist of the year.

The Lopers would add goals in the 56th and 66th minute to secure the 4-1 victory. After being outshot 7-1 by UNK in the first half, the two teams would each register six shots a piece in the second half, but the Lions attack would come up short. Goalkeepers Abby Risner and Beth Hammons would each make a pair of saves.

The Lions return home weekend hosting the Lindenwood Lady Lions (7-2, 4-0) on Sunday at noon at Hal Bodon Field.
