Gajewski's first career goal is not enough as Lions soccer falls 3-1 at Southwest Baptist

Bolivar, Mo. - After defeating #11 Central Missouri 2-1 Thursday evening to end the Jennies' 48-match MIAA unbeaten streak, the Missouri Southern Lions soccer team fell 3-1 at Southwest Baptist this afternoon at SBU Soccer Field.

The Lions (3-5-3, 2-2-3 MIAA) would strike first as Kayla Gajewski scored her first goal of the season and also of her career in the 21st minute as the sophomore midfielder picked up the ball that bounced off a Bearcat defender and shoot it in from the right side to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats (7-4-1, 3-3) would respond in the 42nd minute as Ashley Creason scored off a corner kick from Elin Hammar to knot the game at one apiece. With the match tied at one at halftime, Southwest Baptist added goals in the 77th and 87th minutes to secure the 3-1 victory.

The Bearcats outshot the Lions 17-10, including 11-5 on goal, on the afternoon. Southern would be led by Gajewski with three shots as Kelly White, Tiffany Laughlin and Karley Thomas would add two shots each. Goalkeeper Beth Hammons made eight saves on the afternoon.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday stepping out of conference to host Rogers State (Okla.) (1-7) in a non-conference match at 6 p.m. at Hal Bodon Field for Pink Night.
