Joplin, Mo. - Behind a goal from senior forward Tiffany Laughlin in the 72nd minute, the Missouri Southern Lions soccer team shutout Missouri Western 1-0 tonight at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
The Lions (4-7-4, 3-4-3 MIAA) came out attacking early and often in the match as they outshot the Griffons (2-14-2, 0-10-1) 14-7 on goal. Getting many good looks at the goal, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half as the two sides each attempted six shots in the period.
Finding more firepower in the second half, the Lions capitalized on their best scoring opportunity of the evening in the 72nd minute as Laughlin nothced her third goal of the year. After a corner kick from sophomore defender Kimmy Hulse, and a shot on goal by junior forward Katelyn Roberson that deflected off a Western defender, Laughlin scored the unassisted goal off the deflection knocking it in the top left corner of the net from two yards out.
Western outshot Southern 19-16 in the match, but all but two of Lions shots were on goal as the Griffons goalie Sarah Lyle made 13 saves. Laughlin led Southern's attack with six shots, five on goal, as seven different Lions registered a shot in the match. Senior goalkeeper Abby Risner played all 90 minutes of the match making seven saves, while picking up her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career in the process.
With the victory, Southern keeps their hopes alive for a MIAA Postseason Tournament berth. A win on Sunday over Northwest Missouri and a loss or tie by Central Oklahoma to Emporia State will qualify the Lions for postseason play.
The Lions wrap up the regular season on Sunday hosting Northwest Missouri (4-11-2, 2-7-1) at 1 p.m. for Senior Day at Hughes Stadium.
