Women finish weekend with four more provisionals and a school record


Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women's track and field team had four more provisionals and a school record in day two of the 2010 MSSU/Radio Shack Invitational today at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin. 

Senior Ciara Lipsey hit a provisional and broke her own school record while winning the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, five and a half inches. Both sophomore Nicole Green and senior Erin Steffens earned provisionals with Green winning the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, seven and a half inches and Steffens taking second with a heave of 43 feet, seven and a quarter. Seniors Cortney Vie and Emilie Mieseler placed fourth and sixth in the event. 

Sophomore Lisa Vengels took home the title in the high jump with a provisional height of five feet, five and three quarter inches, while sophomore Rachel Olinyk was second at five feet, one and three quarter inches. Junior Brandy Simpson and sophomore Gayla Booth tied for ninth. Sophomore Cyarra Prince was second in the triple jump, while Booth finished sixth. 

The Lions went 5-6-7-8 and 12 in the 200 meter dash with freshman JeAnna Sheppard placing fifth, followed by senior Danielle Oliver, Simpson, Prince and Tia Cook. Oliver was fourth in the 60 meter dash, while Prince, Sheppard and Vengles placed first, second and fourth in the hurdles. 

Courtney Waltbillig took home the title in the mile run with Ashley Bunch finishing just four tenthes of a second behind her in second. Carita Riutta was second in the 400 meters, while Alex Close placed second in the 600 yard. Katie Schmidt placed second in the 5k with a time of 19:52.02 and the 4x400 team rounded out the event with a second place finish. 

The Lions will be back at it next weekend, playing host to the Baymont Inn/Fazolis Invitational. 

 

--Friday Night's Recap--

The Missouri Southern women's track and field team earned two provisionals today in split squad action at the Arkansas Invitational and the MSSU/Radio Shack Invite. 

Senior Ashley Bunch earned a solid provisional racing in the 5k at Arkansas, taking home the title in a time of 17:30.87. 

At the Radio Shack, senior Emilie Mieseler was second in the weight throw, but hit a provisional of 54 feet, four inches. Senior Cortney Vie was third in the weight throw at 52 feet, three and a quarter, while sophomore Nicole Green and freshman Kiley Jones placed 11th and 14th, respectively in the event. 

Junior Brandy Simpson was second in the women's long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 11 and a half inches, while sophomore's Cyarra Prince, Lisa Vengels and Gayla Booth placed 9-10-11 in the event. 

Freshman JeAnna Sheppard was fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.28, while senior Danielle Oliver finished sixth, just three tenthes of a second behind. Simpson and Prince were seventh and eighth, respectively in the 200m, while sophomore Tia Cook placed 12th in the event. 

The team will be back at it tomorrow finishing up at both locations.
