Shank's record night highlights track opening night
Joplin, Mo. -- Southern distance runner Kimi
Shank picked up an automatic qualifying time and broke her own
school record in the process as the Missouri Southern women's track
and field team competed at the University of Arkansas and Pittsburg
State today.
Shank placed sixth in the 5k at the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas
with a time of 16:47.34, easily breaking her school record of
17:01.12 she set a year ago at this very same event. The time is an
NCAA automatic qualifying mark and ranks tops in the MIAA and third
fastest in Division II this season. Ashley Bunch and Courtney
Waltbillig placed 10th and 11th in the event.
The only other competitor at Arkansas tonight was Carita Riutta
and the junior placed ninth in the 800 meters with a provisional
time of 1:15.97. She had the top Division II mark in the event.
At Pitt State, Channell Lloyd won both the 55 meter hurdles and
the long jump, while Emilie Mieseler took home the title in the
weight throw. Cyarra Prince JeAnna Sheppard, and Brandy Simpson
placed 4th, 6th and 7th in the hurdles, while Simpson and Gayla
Booth placed second and fifth in the long jump.
Cortney Vie and Nicole Green placed 4th and 5th in the weight
throw, while Kiley Jones was 12th. Green had a provisional distance
of 44 feet in the shot put, placing second, while Erin Steffens was
fourth and Mieseler and Vie placed 6th and 8th, respectively.
Prince was third in the triple jump, while Booth and Rachel Olinyk
placed 6th and 7th. Olinyk placed second in the high jump with a
height of 5-05.75, while Lisa Vengels and Simpson were 4th and
ninth. Ciara Lipsey placed second in the pole vault with a height
of 11-9.75, while Kelly McKay was fourth in the 55 meter dash.
