Women in first as records fall at day two of 2010 MIAA Indoor Championships

Joplin, Mo. -- Both Kimi Shank and Emilie Mieseler broke MIAA records and took home gold as the Missouri Southern women's track and field team leads by 22 points after day two of the 2010 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Mieseler shattered the MIAA record in the weight throw by nearly three feet as she bested her nearest competition by more than eight feet in taking home the title. The senior threw the weight 61 feet, two and a quarter inches besting the previous MIAA record of 58-11.50 set by MSSU's Danee Jones in 2005. She came just seven inches shy of breaking Jones' school mark in the event. Cortney Vie and Nicole Green placed eighth and ninth in the event.

Shank completely obliterated the MIAA and building record in the 5k with a first place time of 16:59.85. The MIAA's previous best in the 5k was 17:17.19 set by PSU's Jeannette Mott in 2002 and the previous building record was 17:10.79 set by Arkansas' Christin Wurth in that same year. Ashley Bunch was fourth in the 5k, while Victoria Kline was 16th.

Also earning points for the Lions was Ciara Lipsey who placed second in the pole vault with a height of 12-1.5. Channell Lloyd was third in the triple jump, besting her NCAA automatic distance by nine inches and sitting sixth nationally with a jump of 39-09.25. Cyarra Prince and Gayla Booth were 8th and 14th in the tirple.

The DMR team of Olga Bularova, Kelly McKay, Alex Close and Courtney Waltbillig, came just shy of re-claiming their MIAA record that was taken away by Emporia State last season with a first place finish in a time of 12:20.09.

Carita Riutta had the fastest time in the 600 yard, qualifying for finals with a mark of 1:27.32, while Olga Bulgarova and Lloyd qualified for the finals in the 800m and 60 meter hurdles. Kelly McKay ran the fourth fastest time in prelims qualifying for the finals of the 200 meters with a time of 25.64.

The Lions have a 22 point lead over second place Central Missouri, 48-26. Pittsburg State is third with 23, while Northwest Missouri (21), Truman (21), UNO (20), Emporia State (16), Fort Hays (10) and Southwest Baptist (1) round out the team scores.

In all, four MIAA and two Leggett & Platt Athletic Center records were broken today with meet records falling in the weight throw, 5k, triple jump, and the pole vault, while building records in the 5k and weight throw were shattered.

Action concludes tomorrow with events beginning at noon in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
