Hays, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern women's cross country team placed second today at the 2010 MIAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Fort Hays State University.
Southern had three runners in the top 12, but Pittsburg State had four in the top ten to edge the Lions by 55 points.
Leading the Lions was senior Silvia Pineda with a fourth-place finish. She earned All-MIAA honors with a time of 21:46.20 over the 6k course. Sophomore Marlee Tegenkamp was eighth and also was All-MIAA with a time of 21:57.40.
Freshman Rachel Schrader was 12th with a time of 22:21.00 and was an honorable mention All-MIAA pick, while freshmen Nicole French and Michelle Stevens, as well as senior Victoria Kline placed 37th, 38th and 39th, respectively. Senior Olga Bulgurova was 44th, while sophomore Katie Schmidt placed 52nd.
The Lions came into the event ranked fourth regionally and 23rd in Division II, but took out 13th ranked Truman State as the Bulldogs were second in the region, as well. With the win over Southern, PSU takes the Sonic Trophy Series point from the Lions and leads the overall standings 2-1.
The Lions will be back in action on November 20 when Southern travels to Warrensburg, Mo. for the 2010 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Meet.
