Kansas City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women's track and field program has been picked to finish third in the 2013-14 MIAA indoor track and field preseason coaches poll released today by the league.
The Lions finished second last year in the indoor meet, trailing Lincoln for the team title. Southern returns three individual champions and the bulk of the distance medlay championship team including Brittani Reagan in the long jump, Melanie Bower in the pole vault and Kylie Cornman in the shot put.
Cornman went on to earn All-American honors in the shot put. The Lions return All-Americans from the outdoor season including Whitney Hardy in the high jump, Reagan in both the long and triple jump and Kaylee Morgan in the long jump.
Lincoln earned all but one first place vote with the Lions earning the other first place vote. The Blue Tigers were followed by Central Missouri with 82 points, but the Lions trailed the Jennies by just one point with 81. Pittsburg State was picked fourth, followed by Emporia State, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Baptist, Northwest Missouri, Fort Hays, Lindenwood and Central Oklahoma to round out the poll.
The Lions open up the indoor season on December 6-7 at Central Missouri and have their first home meet scheduled for January 10-11.
