Quincy, Ill. -- The Missouri Southern Lions started the season strong today with a pair of opening victories in the 2010 Quincy University Tournament, sweeping Clarion in the opener and defeating the host Quincy, 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Lions dominated in the first match winning by the game scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23. They held Clarion to just a .125 attach average, while knocking down 32 kills, 40 digs and seven blocks.
Rachel Olinyk had seven kills and a .545 attack average while Amelia Judge had seven kills and two blocks. Ashlee Russell had six kills, ten digs and three blocks, while Elin Skei dished out 29 assists and racked up four digs and a block. Shakila Balkhi had 11 digs in the match.
In the nightcap, The Lions won games one and two by the scores of 25-18 and 25-12, hitting .350 in game two, but dropped game three 16-25 and came through with the deciding game, winning 25-23.
Olinyk had another good game with 10 kills and a 304 attack average, while adding four digs and two blocks. Russell added 10 kills, a .333 attack average, 16 digs and a block.
Renee Rheinecker had 8 kills, two digs and two blocks, while Brittany Vavao-Huggins hit .353 and had ten kills, three digs and a pair of blocks. Skei dished out 37 assists with six digs, while Balkhi added 21 digs.
The Lions had 50 kills as a team, while dishing out 45 assists and knocking down 64 digs and five blocks. They hit .293 as a team, while limiting Quincy to a .096 average.
The Lions finish off the tournament with a 10 am match with Alderson-Broaddus and a noon showdown with St. Joseph's (Ind.).
