Lions split final day at St. Edward's Tournament
Austin, Texas -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a straight-set match to Abilene Christian earlier today, but rallied to win a barnburner in the nightcap, defeating Dallas Baptist in five games.
Southern (6-2) dropped its opener, falling to Abilene Christian (5-2) in three games. Individual game scores were 21-25, 23-25, and 19-25.
Ashlee Russell led the Lions with 10 kills and nine digs, while hitting .333 against the Wildcats. Amelia Judge had nine kills and five digs, while picking up two blocks. Elin Skei had 24 assists and nine digs, while picking up five kills. Shakila Balkhi had nine digs of her own.
The Lions hit just .171 as a team, but out-blocked ACU 7.5-5.
In Southern's second match of the day, the Lions won the first game against Dallas Baptist, but dropped the next two before rallying for the final two games to take the match. Individual match scores were 26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 25-21 and 15-13.
Russell had a double-double with 18 kills and ten digs, while hitting .400 in the match. Renee Rheinecker and Rachel Olinyk had 17 and 13 kills, respectively, while Jeanna Feldmann and Kristin Hylton added 16 and 12 digs, respectively. Balkhi had ten digs, while Skei dished out 51 assists and Judge added 12 kills.
The Lions hit .262 as a team and had 11 team blocks and hit .379 and .300 in the final two games.
The Lions will be back in action on September 15 when Southern opens up MIAA play with a match at Nebraska-Omaha.
