Omaha, Neb. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team ran into a tough Nebraska-Omaha squad tonight as the Lions dropped their MIAA opener against the Mavericks three games to none. Individual game scores were 18-25, 18-25 and 23-25.
The Lions (6-3, 0-1 MIAA) were led by a strong outing from Rachel Olinyk as the junior college transfer had 11 kills, no errors and hit .550 in the match. She aslo added three digs. Ashlee Russell and Amelia Judge had seven kills each, while Russell added 13 digs and Judge had three blocks. Shakila Balkhi had 15 digs, while Elin Skei had 25 assists and six digs.
The first game was tied at 11 points each, before UNO (8-1, 1-0 MIAA) went on an 11-5 run to push the score to 22-15. UNO finished off the set to win 25-18. The second set was all Mavericks as UNO led 11-5 early on and pushed its lead to 18-10, before winning by an identical score of game one, 25-18. Southern led 11-10 midway through the third game and the game was tied at 14 each, before the Mavs pushed ahead 22-16. The Lions were down 24-19 in the game, before Southern scored the next four points in a row to cut the score to 24-23, but UNO scored on the next point to take the match.
The Lions will be back in action this Saturday night when Southern plays host to Drury University in its 2010 home opener. First serve is set for 5 pm in Young Gymnasium.
