Lions sweep Drury in volleyball action

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team hit .346 as a team and swept the visiting Drury Panthers three sets to none today in volleyball action at Young Gym. Individual set scores were 25-20, 25-16, and 25-23. 

The Lions (7-3) were led offensively by Amelia Judge as the senior hit .667 with 12 kills and three blocks. Rachel Olinyk, Renee Rheinecker and Ashlee Russell had 11 kills each. Russell had nine kills, while Olinyk hit .444. Elin Skei had 41 assists and nine digs, while Shakila Balkhi had a match-high 17 digs. 

The Lions hit .346 as a team and out killed the Panthers (10-4) by 20 (51-31). Southern led Drury in blocks 7-3 and out dug the Panthers 53-36.

The Lions trailed 15-11 in the first set, but fought back to tie the set at 18 before Drury went back ahead at 19-18. Southern's first lead of the set came at 21-20 on a kill from Rheinecker as the Lions scored the final five points of the set and closed it out on another kill from Rheinecker. 

The second set was all Lions as Southern opened up a 21-10 lead and led 24-11 before Drury scored five-straight points. Another kill by Rheinecker, however, gave the second set to the Lions. The Lions trailed 10-8 in the final set before a MSSU timeout and trailed again at 18-14 before another Southern timeout. The Lions then went on 7-4 run to tie the set at 22, forcing a Drury timeout and out scored Drury 3-1 to close out the match. 

The Lions will be back in action on September 24 when they will play host to Truman at 7 pm in Young Gym.
