Lions dismantle visiting Missouri Western in three sets
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team hit .408 as a squad and took out the visiting Missouri Western Griffons three sets to none today at Young Gymnasium in Joplin. Individual set scores were 25-14, 25-12 and 25-13.
Southern (8-4, 1-2 MIAA) wins its first match in MIAA play this season and was led offensively by Ashlee Russell as the senior hit .529 with 11 kills and five digs. Amelia Judge hit .667 with seven kills and three blocks, while Shakila Balkhi had a match-high 10 digs. Elin Skei dished out 23 assists and added four digs, while Kristin Hylton had seven digs of her own.
Western (7-7, 3-3 MIAA) hit -.025 as a team but the Griffons were led by Stephanie Hattey with six kills and a .455 attack average.
There were six tied scores and three lead changes in the fist set as the Lions took an 8-7 lead early on and led throughout. The second set saw three tied scores and three lead changes with the Lions taking a 6-5 lead and leading for the rest of the set, while the third set saw the Lions lead from the opening serve.
Southern will be back in action next weekend as the Lions play host to their own tournament.
