Lions volleyball falls at 15th ranked Emporia State, 3-1
Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team took a set off of 15th ranked Emporia State tonight, but fell to the Hornets three sets to one at White Auditorium in Emporia. Individual set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 15-25 and 9-25.
The Lions (12-7, 2-5 MIAA) tied the set three times in the first set, but never took a lead as the Hornets (15-3, 6-1 MIAA) pushed ahead at 7-6 and never looked back. The second set was tied at 5-5 after an ESU kill, but a dump from Elin Skei gave the Lions a 6-5 lead. The lead would grow to 12-9, before Emporia came back and tied the set at 15, before taking a 17-15 lead. Three consecutive ESU attack errors gave the Lions back their lead and despite being tied at 20 all, Southern scored five of the final six points to take the set.
The third and fourth sets, however, were all Emporia as the Hornets hit .464 in set three and .400 in the finale.
The Lions were led by Amelia Judge as the senior had ten kills, hit .667 and added five blocks. Rachel Olinyk had nine kills and a pair of blocks, while Elin Skei added 37 assists and nine digs. Shakila Balkhi had 17 digs.
ESU was led by Brittney Miller with 23 kills and a .538 attack average.
The Lions will be back in action on October 13 as they play host to Pittsburg State in a Sonic Trophy Series match-up at 7 pm in Young Gymnasium.
