Maryville, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell in straight sets tonight, losing three sets to none at Northwest Missouri. Individual set scores were 25-19, 25-21 and 27-25
Southern (13-9, 3-7 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk as the junior had 14 kills. Elin Skei had 34 assists, while Jeanna Feldmann, Shakila Balkhi and Ashlee Russell had 15, 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Northwest (9-9, 5-5 MIAA) had three players with double-figure kills, led by Hanna Alex's 14. Setter Laira Aikin had a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
The Bearcats opened up an early 9-4 lead in the first set against the Lions, forcing a Southern timeout. The Lions fought back, however, and cut the lead to 15-13 to force a Northwest timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Lions scored the next two points to tie the set at 15, however the Bearcats would score the next three points and wouldn't trail from then on in the set.
The Lions led 12-8 in the second set to force a Northwest timeout. The Bearcats would tie the set at 17, and again at 18 and 19, before taking the lead at 21-20 and would score the final six of eight points to take the second set.
The third set was tied five times in the first nine points, before the Bearcats took a 10-9 lead. Southern would re-take the lead at 12-11. Northwest scored four of the next five points to take a 15-11 lead. The Bearcats led 24-21 before Southern took its final timeout of the set, but the Lions scored the next three points to tie the set at 24. Southern went ahead 25-24, but Northwest scored the next three points to close out the match.
The Lions will be back in action on October 19 when they play host to Nebraska-Omaha at 5 pm in Young Gymnasium.
