Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team split a pair of matches today in the final day of the 2011 MSSU Invitational, falling 3-0 to Harding, but rebounding from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Newman, 3-2.
Southern (1-3) hit .091 in its first match against Harding today where the Lady Bison hit .293 as a team. Individual set scores were 20-25, 17-25 and 18-25. Casey Ball had eight kills, while Katie Politte added six and 10 digs. Sydney Potts had 18 assists, while Elin Skei added ten.
In the Lions' second match, Southern went down two sets to none, but completed the comeback and won the final three sets. Individual set scores were 20-25, 27-29, 25-22, 25-18 and 15-9.
Rachel Olinyk paced the Lions with 18 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. Ball had 12 kills and ten digs for the double-double, while Renee Rheinecker had ten kills and a .421 attack average. Politte had 13 kills, as well. Skei, playing in her first match not as a setter, had 13 digs, while Rocky Crook added 16. Sydney Potts had 53 assists on the night.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Dallas, Texas to compete in the Dallas Baptist Invite. Southern will take on West Alabama and Midwestern State (Texas) on Friday, while facing off against East Central (Okla.) and Dallas Baptist on Saturday.
