Southern volleyball falls 3-0 to third ranked Washburn

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team made it interesting and hung in with third ranked Washburn in every set, but the Lady Blues swept the Lions tonight, 3-0 in Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 23-25, 19-25, and 22-25. 

Southern (5-20, 3-10 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk with 13 kills and a .267 attack average. Casey Ball had 11 kills, while Sydney Potts dished out 29 assists and Rocky Crook had a team-high ten digs. 

Washburn (26-1, 13-0 MIAA) hit .223 as a team, including .086 in the opening set, but the Lady Blues scored the points when they needed and pulled out the match. 

The first set featured 15 tied scores and eight lead changes as the Lions led 23-22 late in the opener. Two-straight points from Washburn, however gave the Lady Blues the set. 

In the second set, there were four ties and three lead changes as the Lady Blues took a 9-8 lead early and led from that point on. WU hit .387 in the set. 

Southern took a 20-15 lead in the final set, but the Lady Blues stormed back and scored seven-straight points to lead 22-20. Washburn would score three out of the final five points to take the match. 

The Lions had 13 team blocks with Katie Politte leading the way with eight. 

Southern will be back in action this weekend with road matches at Fort Hays and Emporia State.
