Southern volleyball drops a tight four-set match at Emporia State
Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team won the first set tonight at Emporia State, but the Hornets rebounded to win the final three sets and the match tonight in MIAA volleyball action. Individual set scores were 28-26, 15-25, 23-25, and 22-25.
The Lions (5-22, 3-12 MIAA) were led offensively by Rachel Olinyk and Casey Ball as the pair had 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Ball added 16 digs for a double-double, while Sydney Potts had a double-double of her own with 46 assists and 13 digs. Elin Skei and Katie Collins had 12 and nine digs, respectively, while Katie Politte had five kills and hit .455 for the match.
Emporia (20-8, 12-3 MIAA) was led by a pair of ten kill performances from Paige Vanderpool and Courtney Haring, while Meg Schwartz added 28 digs.
The Lions trailed the first set 20-18 and 22-21 but tied the set and led 24-22. ESU, however, tied the set at 25 and again at 26, before the Lions scored the final two points to win the set.
The second set was all Hornets as ESU raced out to a 10-5 lead and led throughout. Southern scored the first point of the third set and led 15-12 after an ace from Skei. Southern led again at 19-16, but ESU tied the set at 20 and scored five of the final eight points.
The final set started with a 12-2 run from Emporia. The Lions stormed back and got to within three at 19-16, and to within two at 24-22, but a kill from the Hornets' Hunter Porter ended the match.
The Lions will be at Missouri Western on Tuesday night, before finishing the regular season with a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday against Truman and Northwest Missouri.
