St. Joseph, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a tough, four-set match tonight at Missouri Western, falling three sets to one against the Griffons. Individual set scores were 19-25, 24-26, 25-21 and 20-25.
The Lions (5-23, 3-13 MIAA) were led offensively by Katie Politte and Rachel Olinyk as the pair had 12 kills each. Politte hit .407 and added five blocks, while Olinyk hit .300. Sydney Potts dished out 36 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double, while Rocky Crook had a team-high 15 digs. Katie Collins and Elin Skei had 11 and 10 digs, respectivley.
Western (14-15, 7-9 MIAA) had four different players with double-figure kills, led by 16 from Amanda Boender. Sarah Faubel had a match-high 16 digs, while Stephanie Hattey added 47 assists and 13 digs.
Western led from start to finish in the first set with the Griffons' largest advantage coming at six twice, once at 10-4 and again at 18-12. Southern got to within two (21-19), but Western scored the final four points to take the set.
Southern led for most of set No. 2, including a 24-20 advantage late, but the Griffons scored six-straight points to take the set. After going down 5-1 in the third set, the Lions tied the set at six and took a 10-7 lead after a Western attack error. The Griffons tied the set at 12, but a kill from Skei broke the tie, and the Lions led from then on out.
The fourth set featured four tied scores and two lead changes, but Western took a 7-6 lead early and wouldn't look back. The Lions got to within three (23-20) late, but couldn't pull any closer.
Southern will conclude its season this weekend with matches against Truman at 7 pm on Friday and senior day on Saturday at 7 pm against Northwest Missouri.
