Lions Volleyball drop two on day one at PSU Classic

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team played strong, but dropped a pair of matches today in the opening day of the 2012 Pittsburg State Classic at Pittsburg High School.

The Lions (0-2) opened up the day against Illinois-Springfield. After drooping the first two sets to the Prairie Stars, the Lionscame back and hit .286 in set three to win 25-11, before losing the fourth and final set in extra points. Individual set scores were 22-25, 18-25, 25-11 and 25-27. 

Katie Politte led the way for Southern with 15 kills and 13 digs, while Nai Montano added nine kills and Danielle Severns had eight. Abby Finder dished out 36 assists in the match, while Sydney Potts had 16 digs. 

In Southern's second match of the day, the Lions won the opening set 25-23, before losing the final three sets by the scores of 20-25, 10-25 and 12-25. 

Callie Whetstone had a team-high 11 kills in the match, while Politte again had double-figures with ten. Finder dished out 29 assists, while Potts had nine digs. 

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with a 9 am match against William Jewell and a 2 pm match with Harding.
