Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight in non-conference action at Pittsburg State. Individual set scores were 17-25, 19-25 and 17-25.
Southern (0-11, 0-2 MIAA) was led offensively by freshman Callie Whetstone with seven kills and a .357 attack percentage. Freshman Payton Graves had six kills and a .364 attack percentage, while freshman setter Abby Finder had 18 assists and seven digs. Sophomore Katie Politte had a match-high 11 digs.
PSU (8-4, 0-3 MIAA) was led by Brooke Fay and Paula Okrutna with nine kills each.
The Gorillas started out strong and led 8-3 early on in the first set, forcing a Lions' timeout. Southern fought back, though and cut the PSU lead to 17-9, to force a Gorilla timeout. PSU led 20-11, but the Lions scored four of the next five points to cut the lead to 21-15. PSU, however, would score four of the next six points to take the set.
Pitt State took a 6-1 lead early on in the second set, forcing an MSSU timeout. The Lions came back and after trailing 10-2, Southern reeled off an 11-2 run to lead 13-12. The set was tied at 13 and again at 14, but the Gorillas went on an 11-5 run to end the set.
The Gorillas opened up a 4-2 lead in the third set, but the Lions went on a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead and led again at 6-5. The Gorilla lead grew to 17-10, forcing a Lions' timeout, but Pitt, however, would go on an 8-7 run to end the set and take the match.
The Lions will be back in action this Friday, playing host to Truman State at 7 pm in Young Gym.
