Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team came close, but couldn't pull out a victory as the Lions lost three sets to one tonight to Southwest Baptist. Individual set scores were 22-25, 13-25, 25-19, and 20-25.
The Lions (0-16, 0-7 MIAA) fell down 12-3 in the first set, but fought back to cut the score to 14-11, forcing an SBU (5-12, 16 MIAA) timeout. After the Bearcats led 21-17, Southern again fought back and after an SBU attack error made the score 23-22, the Bearcats called another timeout. However, SBU would get the next two points after kills from Carrie Johnson.
Set two was all SBU as teh Bearcats hit .304 to the Lions -.226.
With the exception of a tied score at 2-2, the Lions led the entire set in the third frame as Southern held SBU to just seven kills and six errors for an average of .032 to win the set.
In the fourth set, The Lions tied the set at four, five, six, seven and eight, but SBU went ahead 11-8 forcing a Southern timeout. The set would be tied again at 13 after a kill from Nai Montano, but that would be as close as the Lions would get. SBU went on a 12-7 run to end the set.
Callie Whetstone led the Lions with 11 kills and a .471 attack average. Abby Finder had 34 assists, while Kaycia Fry had a team-high 10 digs. Danielle Severns had eight kills, while Sydney Potts and Katie Politte had nine digs each.
