Lions split opening matches at Pitt State Invite

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team ended a 38-match losing streak today as the Lions defeated Ouachita Baptist three sets to two in the second of two matches played today at the Pittsburg State Invite. The Lions lost their earlier match against Quincy, 3-1. 

Southern (1-1) took the first set of each match today, but gave up set two in each match, as well. Against OBU (0-1), the Lions hit .306 in the opening set, but gave up set two to OBU 21-25. Southern came back and won the third set 25-14, but the Tigers took the Lions to extra points in the fourth set, winning 27-25 to force the fifth and deciding set. 

The Lions started strong in the fifth set, leading 7-1 and again 8-2 at the turn. Ouachita would get as close as three (11-8), but the Lions would close it out, winning the deciding set 15-11. 

Payton Graves led the offensive attack for southern, hitting .343 and adding 16 kills. Katie Politte had a double-double with 21 kills and 22 digs, while Abby Finder would rake up a double-double of her own with 46 assists and 13 digs. Danielle Severns had 19 digs in the match. 

In the Lions' earlier match, Southern would win the first set, but Quincy (1-0) would come back to win the final three. Politte had nine kills and seven digs, while Finder would add 25 assists and seven digs. 

Southern will be back in action tomorrow as the Lions will take on Southeastern Oklahoma at 10 am and Rockhurst at 3 pm.
