Volleyball splits matches in day one at Arkansas-Monticello Tournament

Monticello, Ark. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team split a pair of matches today in the opening day of the University of Arkansas-Monticello volleyball tournament, losing 3-1 to Kentucky Wesleyan, but dropping host Arkansas-Monticello, 3-1 in match two. 

The Lions (2-4) dropped set one of the opening match to Kentucky Wesleyan (4-1) by the score of 20-25, but rebounded to hit .375 in the second set and win 25-19. The Wildcats, however, would win sets three and four by scores of 18-25 and 20-25, respectively to take the match. 

Katie Politte led the Lions with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Payton Graves had ten kills of her own. Abby Finder added 34 assists, while Mikayla Avery had ten digs. 

In the Lions' second match, Southern would win the first set 25-23, but drop the second set 13-25 to UAM (4-4). The Lions rebounded and and won set three 29-27 and set four 25-22 to take the match. 

Politte, again, led all hitters with 18 kills. Graves had 12 kills, while Finder hit .375 and added 41 assists and four kills. Danielle Severns had a team-high 10 digs, while Avery added eight. 

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as they will take on Union (Tenn.) and Southern Arkansas.
